How to Refocus For More Positive Energy in Uncertain Times (video)

In this Expert Insight Interview hosted by John Golden, Dewitt Jones discusses how people can refocus themselves with more positive energy to emerge stronger from uncertain times both professionally and personally.

This interview discusses:

  • Positive Approach
  • Open Mind

Positive Approach

Life should be approached from the positive rather than from the negative side. For example, National Geographic magazine recognizes what is good in the world rather than focusing on negative news. The approach we decide to take influences the way we do things. If we approach something with fascination, we are going to engage with it. On the other hand, if we approach something with a negative attitude, we are already getting ready for a failure. The important question for people to ask themselves is whether their vision gives them the energy or takes energy away from them. Life visions and goals can easily change, but the attitude should always stay positive. The same principle is in business as well. Leadership teams like to see employees who are open to possibilities, positive, and ready to engage with the projects.

Open Mind

Throughout college, we are taught that there is only one right answer on the multiple-choice test. But, when people start to believe that there is more than one right answer in life, that is when their lives would change. The key is to become comfortable to look at things from different perspectives and to listen to different opinions. Just like in National Geographic, it is important to stay open to learn about new people and places that we might never physically meet and visit, but at least we can broaden our horizons that way. We need to open ourselves to new knowledge and new possibilities. Small things such as switching the news app from Al Jazeera to the New York Times can help us to hear different opinions and perspectives. The blind following of only one direction diminishes the natural curiosity of people and it does not allow for creative breakthrough thinking. In the business world just like in life in general, people need to be challenged to think creatively and outside of the box because that is the only way for innovation and prosperity. Many people doubt their creativity, but creativity is a part of human nature. Especially now in these challenging times, we are the ones with the power to create our own destiny and we need to be immensely grateful for it. Therefore, we need to redo our thoughts about creativity and decide to celebrate what is right in the world. We need to be grateful for all the things that happened and for all the upcoming opportunities that we will have.
