- TShane’s experiences with people across America
- What it means to be a leader
- Ways in which we could all benefit from a change of perspective
Lack of Responsibility
People today are constantly bombarded with stimulation through social media, but there’s a lot of value in going across the country and meeting people face-to-face. John thinks that everyone who decides to run for political office could learn a thing or two from TShane about gaining a perspective on people in this country.
On his hikes, TShane was most surprised by what he called a “ridiculously extreme lack of leadership and acceptance of responsibility.” The older generations say there’s something wrong with kids today, not realizing that they are the ones that raised those kids.
Nature of Leadership
Unfortunately, there’s a pervasive culture of everyone needing to be happy and cool all the time. Even the leadership mantras that we see today revolve around making people happy rather than actually leading.
If you’re going to provide proper leadership, it’s not always about making people happy; it’s about doing the right thing and making the right decisions. Sometimes the right decision is the hard decision, but that’s what leadership is all about.
Change of Perspective
In this day and age, people tend to have a “macro” perspective. They focus too much on the broad political issues, ranting and raving about major problems on the world. Instead, perhaps everyone should focus on being the best version of themselves.
If every person focused their energy on being the best partner, parent, member of the community, etc. the global issues would have a much better chance of taking care of themselves.
