Take Back Your Weekends – Stress Less, Do More, Be Happier (video)

In this Expert Insight Interview, Allison Graham discusses the genesis of her latest book. Allison Graham is an expert, author, and media contributor who talks about problem solving and resiliency. Her latest book is entitled Take Back Your Weekends: Stress Less, Do More, Be Happier.

This Expert Insight Interview discusses:

  • What it means to “take back your weekends”
  • Today’s hustle culture and how we should be working smarter, not harder
  • Why letting your mind rest is crucial

Take Back Your Weekends

Taking back your weekends is not about whether you choose to work on Saturday and Sunday. Allison herself admits that she sometimes works on these days and often feels very inspired to work on weekends.

The key is to have a choice, and the hustle culture of today is making us feel guilty for taking breaks. While Allison is, as she puts it, “all for the hustle,” she emphasizes that we need to be able to recharge without the guilt. That is how we can tap into our creativity, innovation, and productivity.

Hustle Culture

Today, we certainly live in a hustle culture, but also in a culture that celebrates activity. We think that if a person is constantly working, constantly in motion, they must be contributing. However, perhaps the more thoughtful approach would be looking at whether we’re doing things efficiently.

We need to look at the results and the outcomes of our work, and even whether it is a healthy way to operate. Sometimes we use business to avoid the truth and reality of our lives, but life eventually catches up with us no matter what.

Letting Your Mind Recover

You have to let your mind and body recover. Not allowing your mind to rest after a period of high-intensity mental work is akin to playing a sport with an injury. If you continue without a rest and recovery period, your injuries will only get worse.

That said, it is sometimes hard for us to tune in and listen to our bodies and minds telling us to take a break. This pattern of behavior ultimately leads to severe burnout and a collapse. Setting unattainable goals is one of the things that hugely contributes to this, by giving us an excuse never to be done with our work.
