Your Antidote to Infotoxification
People sure love to invent new terms. Did you know that “Information Overload” is now also referred to as “Infobesity” or even “Infotoxication“? (Shoutout to Wikipedia for these!).
But regardless of what you call it, the reality is that there is a tipping point at which you end up with too many choices, which results in decision paralysis. Barry Schwartz documented this in his book The Paradox of Choice nearly 15 years ago. If you consider that our choices in almost everything have probably exploded since that book was published, our decision paralysis is likely now chronic or even fatal!
There is even a lot of discussion recently about relationships that points to an interesting fact: Having access to so many dating apps and sites has made it more difficult for people to commit to, or even chose, a prospective partner – the “but what if something better is on the next page syndrome” – and so some people are actually staying single longer and dating less. Quite the paradox, don’t you think?
But let’s get back to the business world. To be honest, the wholesale adoption of content marketing and the championing of inbound strategies over the past number of years has contributed in no small way to business information overload. It seems like nearly everybody blogs, and pretty much everybody shares. Sometimes I wonder: does anyone actually read? (And yes I do get the irony of me writing a blog post and alluding to the overabundance of blog posts that flood our screens daily–but please bear with me).
