The No-BS Guide to AI, Personal Branding, and Lead Capture for Contractors (video)

There’s a painful irony hiding inside most contractor businesses: the phone rings, nobody answers, and the customer moves on — permanently. According to industry data, roughly 63% of phone calls to small businesses go unanswered. For a plumber, landscaper, or carpet cleaner, every one of those missed calls is revenue walking out the door to a competitor who simply picked up — or, increasingly, had AI do it for them.

That’s the gap Kai Stone saw when he built StoneSystems.io, an AI-powered automation and CRM platform built specifically for contractors. In just over a year, Stone has helped more than 1,000 contractors plug the holes in their businesses — missed calls, nonexistent online presence, zero automation — all for $297 a month. In this episode of SalesPOP!, host John Golden sat down with Stone to unpack exactly how he did it, and what contractors at any stage can learn from his approach.

It Started with Airbnb’s and a Simple Observation

Stone’s path into the contractor space wasn’t conventional. He got his start managing his parents’ Airbnb properties, where he encountered a property management CRM for the first time. The software was basic — calendar, bookings, website — but his mother, who wasn’t tech-savvy, was paying $200 a month for it and still didn’t know how to use most of it. That observation stuck with him: if his mom couldn’t figure it out, contractors — who are typically even less comfortable with technology — were almost certainly in the same boat. The opportunity was clear: build something simple, price it affordably, and scale through volume rather than chasing a handful of high-ticket clients.

Authentic Advertising in a World of Hype

One of the most striking parts of the conversation is Stone’s philosophy on advertising. In a space dominated by hyper-edited videos and aggressive pitches, Stone took the opposite approach. His ads are direct, unpolished, and intentionally casual — because that’s what resonates with contractors.

As Stone put it during the interview, contractors have a built-in radar for inauthenticity. They’ve seen every overpromise in the book. So rather than competing on polish, Stone competes on trust. His retargeting strategy means that by the time a prospect talks to his sales team, they’ve already seen him multiple times, know what the product does, and feel like they know who they’re dealing with.

This philosophy extends to his YouTube channel, which has grown rapidly with zero scripting and zero fancy editing — just Stone talking to his camera about what’s working in the business. In an era of AI-generated content and dopamine-driven editing, the raw format actually stands out.

The $5/Day Personal Branding Playbook

For contractors who haven’t started building a personal brand, Stone’s advice is refreshingly simple: set up an Instagram and a Facebook page (link them so posts cross-publish), start posting before-and-after photos or videos of projects, and run hyper-local Facebook ads for as little as $5 to $10 a day within a 10-mile radius of your service area.

The key insight here is that the social media platforms themselves do much of the heavy lifting. Meta’s algorithm and Google’s AI are designed to serve content to the people most likely to engage with it — which means the platforms are essentially offering free targeting to anyone willing to post consistently. As Stone pointed out, the platforms are begging you to create content because it keeps users on their platforms.

Both Stone and Golden emphasized that putting your face behind the business is no longer optional. Some contractors resist being on camera, but those who show up will always outcompete those who hide.

AI Search Is the New Frontier

Perhaps the most forward-looking part of the conversation was about AI search optimization. Golden urged listeners to search for their own name and business not just on Google, but on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Grok. The results, he warned, will be eye-opening — many businesses that rank well on traditional search engines are completely invisible in AI-generated results.

Stone confirmed that StoneSystems is already helping contractors get ranked in AI search results, and noted that the opportunity is wide open because almost nobody in the contractor space is thinking about it yet. Both compared the moment to the earliest days of Google SEO—a massive land grab in which the first movers will have a disproportionate advantage.

You Don’t Need to Invent — Just Execute

Stone closed with a piece of advice aimed at aspiring entrepreneurs: stop trying to invent something new. He pointed to companies like Lovable AI as examples — you don’t need to build something revolutionary. You just need to find something that works, build your own version, and execute consistently. Even capturing a fraction of a percent of a large market can be life-changing.

The real differentiator isn’t the idea. It’s the willingness to stay on one path long enough to push through the inevitable rough patches rather than jumping to the next shiny thing every time progress stalls.

The Bottom Line

For contractors and small business owners, the takeaways from this conversation are practical and immediate: answer your phone (or let AI do it), put your face online, spend $5 a day on local ads, and start paying attention to how you show up in AI search. The tools are cheap, the competition is still asleep, and the window of opportunity — especially on AI search — won’t stay open forever.
